Clutterbug, Let It Go

We've all been at this fork in the road, when you realize you just have SO. MUCH. STUFF. and you need help. I understand! Here are some great tips thanks to HouseBeautiful's May 2010 online issue to get your life back in order.

Pick pieces with flexibility. The Nelson ottomans by the hearth offer storage and extra seating, and the tops turn over to become trays.

Glass-front cabinets provide great incentives for forcing you — and your family — to be organized. Any clutter or dishware put back in the wrong place will be visible. Try storing everyday dinnerware above the work surface, while hiding the clutter of pots and pans behind closed doors.

This entry is given a formal look with a console and mirror. The console serves merely as a place for lamps and to set down packages and mail. Its limited size means clutter can't easily accumulate.

The secret to keeping clutter and disorder out of the bathroom is to keep all the small, loose items that are used there in separate containers.

The layout of this posh home office includes a large desk, a comfortable sitting area, tons of windows, and few power outlets. Wireless equipment makes it all work. The laptop on the desk functions as the homeowners' main computer, and the printer is out of view and wireless as well.

A large built-in cabinet with open and closed shelves, racks, and plenty of drawers divides the closet into two halves, his and hers. A low bank of drawers provides a convenient place to sit while dressing.

A clean, rectangular wall-mounted box shelf provides a sleek alternative to cabinets, while abundant drawers in a breakfast bar offer copious hideaway storage for items too large for the shelf.
